This is consistently my issue with Bayonetta. Love Bayo, love the game, but it doesn’t necessarily stand up as the paragon of RAH RAH FEMALE EMPOWERMENT that people hold it up to be. Bayonetta is powerful and sexy and doesn’t let anyone step on her, uses her sexuality to her advantage. However, this is different for someone in universe than it is for a viewer.
If you were to meet Bayonetta on the street and try to make an untoward pass at her, your face would be smacked into the concrete quicker than you can say “Fly me to the moon,” or worse. Bayo is a dangerous lady. She is intimidating. She will not take your bullshit. But as a passive viewer, on the other side of the screen, you don’t face that risk. You are free (and perhaps encouraged) to ogle and fetishise to without fear of repercussion. Bayonetta demands respect, but her game does not necessarily demand respect for her from the player. (Not when it’s busy treating you to slo-mo shots of her clothes being shred off.)
It’s a hard thing to put into words, but it just doesn’t sit right with me. If you are going to make a selling point of an overtly sexualised character, at least own up to it. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying something a tad problematic, just don’t gloss over the issue.

on a textual level, a female character can dress however she wants and shouldn’t be slut-shamed and hated for what she prefers to wear.
on a metatextual level, she might still have been designed with an intention to provide fanservice.
this means that criticising a design, as opposed to a character, is neither misogyny nor slut-shaming. being displeased about the way a character has been designed is not synonymous with hating her.

Drakengard 3 Information
Since its surprising reveal and announcement in Famitsu, I’ve noticed across a few sites that there’s a little uncertainty regarding the information we have so far surrounding Drakengard 3. Many people are worried about the game because of Cavia’s unfortunate demise. Hopefully, I can help clear up some of the confusion.
