To be frank, I haven’t read enough of the novels to know if Kino’s gender/how she feels about it is specifically addressed (what a bad blog curator I am!), but I’d like to think of her identifying as some flavour of genderqueer/androgynous, since that’s how she’s typically presented (recent novel covers aside…). The scene from the Life Goes On… movie where she stands looking at herself in the mirror, switching between atashi and boku to refer to herself always struck me as something very integral to her character, with the added bonus that boku tends to be a somewhat neutral, but often masculine-leaning, personal pronoun.
